Le concept d’extraction consiste à s’introduire dans l’esprit d’une personne pendant qu’elle rêve en tant que personnage de son rêve, afin d’atteindre son subconscient et pouvoir y dérober des informations enfouies au plus profond d’elle pendant son sommeil, à son insu.

Pour se connecter ainsi à l’esprit de leur cible et pénétrer ses rêves sous forme de projections, les extracteurs se connectent à elle via une machine transportable dans une valise, qui leur envoie à tous un sédatif afin de les plonger dans un sommeil paradoxal et les relier les uns aux autres pour partager un rêve en commun.

Lors de ce rêve « collectif », il y a un rêveur principal (la « victime » ou un membre de l’équipe des extracteurs), dont l’esprit va servir d’hôte au niveau de rêve créé par l’architecte et peuplé par les projections de la cible et éventuellement des extracteurs impliqués dans ce rêve… Le but étant donc de piéger la cible de l’extraction, qui croit évoluer dans la réalité, afin de l’amener à dévoiler les informations recherchées par les extracteurs.

Pour que l’extraction réussisse, la victime ne doit bien évidemment pas se rendre compte qu’elle rêve et que d’autres personnes sont dans son rêve pour lui dérober des secrets.

Dans le film, Dom Cobb est un spécialiste de l’extraction. Avec son équipe, lors de la scène d’introduction, il va se connecter à l’esprit d’un riche et puissant industriel, Saito, afin de dérober un secret industriel dans son subconscient, et le ramener à son employeur (Cobol Engeneering), un concurrent de Saito, qui finance l’opération pour se procurer ce secret.Lors de cette opération d’extraction sur Saito, celui-ci va découvrir la supercherie et la mission va donc se solder par un échec…
