Ariane est « l’architecte » de l’équipe d’incepteurs formée par Cobb.
C’est donc elle qui crée l’architecture des niveaux dans lesquels vont évoluer les autres personnes impliquées dans le rêve, afin que cela paraisse le plus réel possible.
A la base, Ariane est une des élèves de Miles à Paris, où elle étudie les concepts liés à l’architecture de l’esprit et ses mystères. C’est l’élève la plus douée de Miles.
Lorsque Dom Cobb recrute une équipe en vue de l’inception de Robert Fischer Jr, il recherche un architecte qui sera capable d’élaborer et de construire 3 niveaux de rêves imbriqués. Il lui faut pour cela quelqu’un d’extrêmement doué. N’ayant plus d’architecte suite à la trahison du précédent, Nash, après l’extraction ratée sur Saito, Dom se rend donc à Paris voir Miles afin de trouver ce nouveau membre pour son équipe.
Miles lui recommande alors Ariane, qui va accepter le job et rejoindre l’équipe (très facilement d’ailleurs, ce qui peut paraître troublant). Suite à cela, Ariane va découvrir et être initiée par Cobb à la possibilité de s’introduire dans les rêves d’une autre personne et de construire un univers clos où les personnes infiltrées dans le rêve vont pouvoir évoluer… la difficulté étant que cet univers paraisse le plus réaliste possible afin que la cible de l’extraction / inception ne se rende pas compte qu’elle est dans un rêve et pense que cela est « sa réalité ». Les niveaux construits devront également permettre à l’équipe infiltrée de faire vivre à la victime un scénario prédéfini leur permettant de l’amener à faire ce qu’ils veulent afin de lui dérober une idée (extraction), ou, dans le cas de l’opération sur Fischer, de lui implanter une idée dans son subconscient (inception).
Mais Ariane va jouer en réalité un rôle bien plus complexe et important dans l’histoire. Elle va en effet devenir rapidement la confidente de Dom, qui va lui confier ses états d’âmes, ses regrets suite à la mort de sa femme Mall, et lui révéler ses points faibles qui en découlent, risquant de mettre en péril toute l’opération d’inception sur Fischer Jr.
Au départ, Ariane doit juste concevoir les niveaux, mais sans agir réellement dans le rêve où Dom et le reste de l’équipe va s’introduire. Mais suite à ces révélations sur l’état mental « fragile » de Dom, elle va poser comme condition d’accompagner Dom dans cette aventure, afin de le « surveiller » et de protéger les autres membre de l’équipe… sauf si il révèle ces informations à quelqu’un d’autre de l’équipe. Dom accepte, ce qui prouve qu’il a une grande confiance en elle, bien qu’ils ne se connaissent que depuis peu de temps.
Ariane va donc être un « guide » pour Dom Cobb, et c’est elle qui va l’accompagner jusqu’au bout, dans les limbes, au plus profond de son propre subconscient, et le pousser à faire un choix difficile lors de sa rencontre finale avec sa femme Mall dans ce 4ème niveau de rêve.
On comprend donc mieux le choix du prénom « Ariane » pour ce personnage. En effet, la référence à la mythologie grecque parait maintenant beaucoup plus évidente. Comme dans la mythologie avec le « fil d’Ariane », elle va être un guide pour Cobb. comme dans la mythologie, Ariane est étroitement liée aux concepts de labyrinthe, sauf qu’ici c’est elle même qui les construit.
