Ceci est l’histoire que Mall et Dom Cobb ont vécu ensemble lorsque Mall était encore vivante. Cette histoire se situe bien avant l’action principale du film, où Dom Cobb réalise l’inception sur Fischer.
Lors de cette histoire passée, Mall et Dom ont exploré ensemble la possibilité de partager leurs rêves. Ils se sont construit dans ce rêve une ville entière imaginaire et idéale, à leur image, où ils ont rassemblé tout ce qu’ils aimaient et leur était cher. Ainsi, Mall a reproduit par exemple les différentes maisons où elle avait vécu enfant.
La construction de cette ville gigantesque leur a pris 50 ans (dans le temps de leur rêve), et ils y ont vécu heureux, vieillissant ensemble, ce qu’ils voulaient tous les deux par dessus tout, car ils se l’étaient jurés.
Cela veut dire qu’ils se sont enfoncés à des niveaux très profonds de rêve pour pouvoir rêver si longtemps. Ils ont ainsi du atteindre les limbes, ou presque, où ne subsiste que du subconscient à l’état brut et où il devient très difficile de discerner le rêve de la réalité.
C’est ce qui est arrivé à Mallory, qui s’est « perdue » dans ce rêve, convaincue que ce rêve qu’ils étaient en train de vivre à deux était la réalité. Elle refusa ainsi de se « réveiller » pour revenir à la vraie réalité, comme essayait de la convaincre Dom, encore lucide. Mall a notamment dans ce rêve enfermé sa toupie totem (qui lui aurait permis de savoir si elle se trouvait ou non dans la réalité) dans un coffre fort, afin de ne pas affronter la vérité et rester dans ce monde pour toujours, réalité ou non.
Dom, par dépit et par amour pour elle, lui a alors fait une inception pour la convaincre que ce qu’elle croyait être la réalité ne l’était pas mais était un niveau au-dessus. Il a réussi à lui implanter cette idée en tête : « Ce monde dans lequel je vis n’est pas la réalité ». Cela a fonctionné et ils se sont tous les deux « suicidés dans leur rêve », sur les rails d’un train, leur permettant de revenir à la réalité.
Mais cela a tellement bien fonctionné qu’une fois remontée d’un niveau, Mall était encore persuadée que la réalité n’était toujours pas la bonne. Elle a à son tour essayé de convaincre Cobb de se tuer avec elle, mais en vain bien entendu. Un jour, celui de leur anniversaire de mariage, elle a essayé de convaincre une dernière fois Dom, sans succès. Elle s’est alors « suicidée » en sautant d’un immeuble devant son mari, convaincue de rejoindre la vraie réalité au niveau supérieur.
Cobb se sent forcément responsable, et cela va le hanter tout le temps, ce qui explique qu’il n’arrive pas à se débarrasser de sa projection de Mall (version « maléfique ») quand il est immergé dans le rêve de quelqu’un d’autre, pour une extraction ou une inception…Cette projection essaie systématiquement de lui mettre des bâtons dans les roues et de faire échouer ses missions.
Mall hante également ses souvenirs, sous forme d’un appartement à plusieurs étages, où Mall est toujours présente, à différents moments de leur ancienne vie : les bons (aux étages supérieurs) comme les tragiques (au sous-sol), qui contient le souvenir de cette scène où Mall s’est suicidée sous ses yeux.
Notez que cette explication de cet aspect du film est très importante pour l’explication de la fin du film selon la théorie de « Roméo et Juliette ».

Ce qui pose la question du totem, lorsque Cobb fait découvrir à Arianne, l’existence de Mal, il lui fait egalement découvrir son tourment intérieur, celle-ci identifie tout de suite la nature autodestructrice de Cobb qui ne se préoccupe que de savoir si il est dans le reve de Mal ou non, dans leur réalité, pourquoi systématiquement faire tourner la toupie, qui n’est pas son totem.
-Allant à Mombasa, chercher Eames, il doit semer les pisteurs de Cobbol pour rejoindre Yousouf, s’ensuit une course poursuite. « You’re not dreaming, now! » – les murs se rapprochent comme dans un reve, puis arrive Saito, qui une fois dans la voiture, toute notion de poursuite s’estompe immédiatement.
Notons que Eames lui dit qu’il y a bien eu une inception de tenté, mais qu’elle n’a pas pris.
-Chez Youssouf, les douze dreamers connectés. Cobb se fait une bonne piqure pour tester le matos, et il se retrouve avec Mal, la tete sur le rail, pret à rejoindre les strates supérieurs de leurs reves.
Il se réveille et immédiatement va faire tourner la toupie, pourtant dans le miroir se dessine les formes de sa femme, à travers un voile de rideau. Le test de la toupie est avorté par l’irruption de Saito.
L’ascenseur dans lequelle Ariane s’infiltre lorsque Cobb reve tout seul.
Les révélations de Cobb concernant la réalité de l’inception pratiqué sur sa femme dans le niveau -4, allant chercher Fischer.
Je viens de re-re-revoir le film hier et il y a comme une incohérence dans tout ça – ou alors c’est que quelque chose m’échappe :
On a vu en étudiant la durée relative du temps aux différents niveau de rêves que, pour que Cobb et Mall aient pu vivre 50 ans dans un rêve tout en dormant pendant une durée plausible (donc pas trop longue) dans la réalité, il ont dû descendre au niveau N-5 (dormant ainsi 2h en réalité), ou alors au moins au niveau N-4 (dormant ainsi 21h dans la réalité, ce qui serait déjà bizarre mais, à la limite, possible). Donc ils sont enfoncés très profondément dans leurs rêves, soit au N-5 (les limbes) soit au N-4 (presque les limbes).
Là Mall choisit d’enfermer son totem pour considérer ce niveau N-5 ou N-4 comme SA réalité. Pour la ramener, Cobb lui fait une inception…
Or on apprend dans le film que pour qu’une inception puisse tenir, il faut descendre plusieurs niveau de rêve. Donc au moins 2, voire 3 comme pour l’inception sur Fisher. Si Cobb veut implanter à Mall, dans le niveau N-5 ou N-4, l’idée « ce monde n’est pas réel », alors il doit descendre encore de 2 ou 3 niveaux pour que l’idée prenne. Or on a vu que l’idée a très bien pris, même trop, donc c’était une inception faite dans les règles de l’art, implantée suffisamment profond pour que Mall ne la rejette pas.
Si on suit cette logique et mes différents approximations, Cobb, pour faire l’inception sur sa femme, a du descendre au minimum au niveau N-6, au pire au niveau N-8 ! Dans tous les cas au-delà des limbes !
Je suis un peu perplexe.
à chaque fois je suis quasi sûr d’avoir vraiment compris le film jusqu’à l’image finale « toupie ne s’arretant pas de tourner » ! ce qui voudrait dire qu’il est dans un rêve . Alors quoi penser? Est-il lui enfermé dans un monde de rêve qu’il croit être la réalité , dans ce cas mall aurai bien eu raison où est-ce mall , à ccause de l’inception à délirer et donc cobb serait dans la réalité , si tel est le cas , pourquoi la toupie ne s’arrête pas à la fin ??!! j’aimerai avoir vos opinions =) merci
Il y a un truc qui m’intrigue à propos des limbes:si durant l’inception de Fischer l’équipe passe par 3 niveaux de rêves sous sédatifs ou la mort sédatée(pour saito) pour y accéder,comment est-ce que Cobb et Mall ont pû y accéder en un seul palier et à priori sans sédatifs?(il n’y a aucune mallette ou autre près d’eux lorsqu’ils se réveillent et ils se réveillent directement dans la « réalité »).
Et ce qui me turlupine sur le suicide de Mall,c’est que si elle voulait être crédible,elle aurait mieux fait de se suicider de la fenêtre de la chambre d’hôtel qu’ils avaient réservés pour leur mariage,plutôt que de le faire de la chambre de l’immeuble d’en face…En ajoutant des empreintes digitales de Cobb et des échantillons d’ADN pour permettre de l’identifier…

- pour sortir des limbes il faut se suicider en connaissance de cause.
- pour remonter Dun niveau de rêve il faut un kick en provenance du niveau précédent.
- la mort dans un niveau de rêve quelqconque envoi automatiquement dans les limbes.
La thèse des suicides successifs ne tient pas !
On ne remonte pas Dun niveau de rêve en se suicidant : on redescend aux limbes.
Il n’y a donc aucune raison que mall veuille se suicider pour rejoindre la réalité.
Donc :
- soit elle pense toujours être dans les limbes.
- soit elle pense que la seule vrai réalité sont les limbes (elle y a quand même passé 50 ans de sa jeune vie) et veux y retourner poursuivre sa « vie ».
- soit comme dit dans le film, l’inception a tellement bien marchée quelle est conditionnée a ne pas croire en la réalité quelle est en train de vivre Elle s’est donc bien suicidée et est reelement morte.

FAUX ! ceci est vrai uniquement pendant l’inception sur Fischer, car ils étaient tous sous l’effet du puissant sédatif de Yussuf qui empêche le réveil si on meurt en rêve, comme cela est le cas normalement (cf extraction sur Saito au début quand Arthur meurt au niveau N-2)
Donc à l’époque de Cobb et Mall, ils n’avaient pas ce sédatif de Yussuf… puisque Cobb semblait étonné qu’un sédatif aussi puissant existe, c’est qu’il n’en avait jamais utilisé. Donc à cette époque, mourir dans un rêve renvoie au niveau de rêve inférieur.
Sauf peut être si on est dans les limbes, perdu depuis longtemps, et que se suicider après l’arrêt de l »effet du sédatif dans la réalité (meme peu puissant) permet de se réveiller directement dans la réalité… mais ça, ce ne sont que des suppositions…
Bah sinon il l’aurait facilement retenu
Et pourquoi se suicide t elle en sautant de la fenêtre de l’immeuble faisant face a l’hôtel ? Si tout ne se passait pas en rêve, cela n’aurait il pas été plus simple de sauter de la fenêtre de la chambre en question ?
@draco31.fr: si c’est possible mais c’est tout de même un peu violent comme procédé. Il aimait trop sa femme pour devoir lui tirer dessus, même si il savait que c’était un rêve et d’autant plus si elle pensait que c’était la réalité.
Moi j’ai une autre question: pourquoi Mal n’a pas fait tourner sa toupie dans le niveau au dessus? Maintenant qu’elle doutait vraiment de la réalité, voir une toupie tourner à l’infinie serait la preuve d’un rêve et un bon moyen de convaincre son mari…

Déjà elle était sûre que ce n’était pas la réalité (or ça l’était si on est pro-réalité) parce que l’idée que Cobb lui a incepté était très bien ancrée. Elle était très sûre d’elle. mais elle savait que lui resterait campé sur ses positions, en plus c’est son totem à elle, elle ne peut pas révéler son trucage…
Nan mais sérieux je dis complètement n’importe quoi. Cobb était au courant de son totem à Mall lol mais ce film j’ai un peu de mal à réfléchir dessus donc il faut me pardonner ^^. Perso je pense qu’elle savait que Cobb resterait campé sur ses positions, enfin je en sais pas trop.
Sinon j’ai une autre question : S’ils étaient quasiment dans les limbes, coment se fait-il qu’un niveau ait pu les ramener dans la réalité, alors qu’il faut 4 niveaux de rêves pour y descendre ? Cela est-il à un argument pro-rêve de tout le film (en supposant qu’il soit revenu dans le niveau 3 et que Cobb l’aie pris pour la réalité, et que Mall soit allé dans le -2 aprsè son suicide de la chambre d’hôtel au lieu de vraiment mourir?
Je pense que si Mall semble faire une fixette sur la phrase du train, c’est tout simplement parce que, lorsqu’ils ont du sortir des limbes -qui se trouvaient à un niveau très profond de rêve- ils ont du réitérer plusieurs fois (4 fois environ, si l’on en juge par les strates qui dans le film précèdent l’arrivée finale dans les limbes) ce geste de suicide, et chaque fois avec cette phrase pour se donner du courage. Car on ne peut sortir des limbes comme ça, et comme personne ne peut leur donner la décharge c’est à eux de le faire.
Cette répétition systématique d’un acte de suicide pour remonter à la réalité -ainsi que de sa phrase assortie- explique que Mall nous semble incapable de sortir de ce système de pensée et de croire comme Cobb que ce niveau là est la réalité. Pour Cobb -et dans une certaine mesure pour nous- elle a perdu le fil, ne sait plus où elle en est dans les paliers du rêve.

Il y a un élément auquel je ne trouve pas de réponse satisfaisante au sujet des limbes et du rêve de Cobb et Mall.
Pour sortir de se rêve de 50 ans, Cobb et Mall finissent pas se suicider sous un train. Donc la mort permet à se moment de revenir à la réalité (ou un niveau de rêve plus proche).
Pourquoi Cobb a-t-il besoin de faire l’inception sur Mall pour revenir des limbes ?
Ne peut-il pas tuer Mall et se suicider ensuite, comme cela est « suggéré » dans le face à face entre Saito et Cobb dans les limbes lorsque Saito prend l’arme de Cobb (sachant que l’effet du sédatif s’était dissipé) ?
Personne n’a Remarque que cobb et mal se suicident etant jeunes alors qu’ils avaient soit-dissent vieilli ensemble?
Si je me souviens bien. Il raconte ce qui c’est passé et nous les voyons jeunes. Par contre, vers la fin du film, lorsque Cobb finit par accepter le fait que Mal dans ces rêves n’est qu’une pâle copie de sa femme, nous revoyons les même scènes mais cette fois vieux. Je crois que c’est pour mettre l’emphase sur le fait qu’ils ont passé 50 ans ensemble donc qu’il a en théorie fait ce qu’il avait promis et il s’en rend compte seulement à se moment. Avant il revoyait les événements comme s’ils étaient restés jeunes, mais en faits ils étaient vieux (quoi que dans la réalité ils étaient bien jeunes puisque c’était un rêve… mais faut pas s’embrouiller…).
Cobb a sans doute raté sa vie, tout raté. d’ailleurs, si à la fin il voit le visage de ses enfants, nous spectateurs ne les voyons pas. à plus d’une reprise, son épouse lui dit que leurs enfants ne sont pas ses VRAIS enfants. Cobb cherche sans arrêt ses vrais enfants, pas ceux qu’il a imaginés dans son rêve de bonheur conjugal. ces enfants existent-ils d’ailleurs ? lorsque Cobb et sa femme déambulent dans leur ville imaginaire, on ne les voit jamais en compagnie de leurs « enfants. » de plus, c’est le père de Cobb (Michael Caine) qui l’accueille « chez lui », or ce vieil homme serait un spécialiste de l’architecture des rêves qui enseigne à Paris … qui dirige quoi ? et Mel existe-t-elle ? elle serait selon plutôt une projection …
